Pirates and fire ants

Last weekend we celebrated Kwint's un-birthday. Kwint's real birthday is Dec 23rd. He never gets attention and presents that aren't surrounded by Christmas. It doesn't bother him, but I am a big fan of birthdays and I think he deserves a little party on a non-Christmas occasion. So, we got presents, we made a cake, we went to dinner.

The pictures came up in reverse order and I am too lazy to change it, but as you can see, the party was a pirate theme. Here we are at Pirate Island Pizza...

Here is the Pirate Cake...

Here are the boys "helping" me make the cake...

We had a lot of fun as a family and we all love Kwint so much.

We intended on playing Pirates of the Caribbean Monopoly, but Kaeleb stepped outside for a moment and got bit by a fire ant which very quickly ended the party. We had a good little spiritual experience with it, if I may share.

Fire ant bites burn like crazy, sometimes for hours. So, Kaeleb was writhing in agony and we couldn't distract him. We tried a baking soda paste-- don't know what it does, but my mom used to put it on my bee stings, we tried an ice pack, benadryl, ibuprofen, and a movie. Nothing worked. So, after an hour we decided to try what we know works-- a priesthood blessing. In the blessing Kwint felt inspired to tell Kaeleb that he was given this experience to learn the power of personal prayer. After the blessing he asked Kaeleb to say a prayer that Heavenly Father would heal his bite and make his foot stop hurting.

Kaeleb was still crying and sobbed out a little "Heavenly Father, please make my foot feel better..." and what do you know? Not five minutes later his body suddenly relaxed, he threw off the ice pack and said nonchalantly, "It's better." And that was that. He got up and started playing. I love the priesthood!

I have one more matter of business. I have lost much sleep over this. One of my mission comps daughters inspired me. I am thinking about donating my hair to locks of love. It would be a super huge deal. I have only had short hair twice in my life and I just don't like it, not to mention that in order to grow my coarse, dry, frizzy hair that long without major split ends is to stop blow-drying, curling or straightening it for the next 6 months. So, do I put up with ugly, frizzy hair for 6 months and then sacrifice it all for the greater good, or do I hold on to my identity and selfishly keep it long and shiny? I am putting it to a vote. It may not help me decide, but I am curious. Last time I cut it I was amazed by how personally some people took it, so I wonder what my family friends think about it.

Is there no end to the perfection blooming in your house? I love your stories and am so glad you share. You're such an inspiration to me.
Now as for the hair issue...since I lived with your for four glorious months. I know that you have lots and lots and lots of ridiculously thick glorious hair. It will always be that way even when it changes to shades of gray. I say share it with those who don't have it. I mean you're going to cut it anyway, even it it's just an inch or two at a time. So forego the two-inch trims, grow it out, and cut it off. You'll feel so great about doing so...and you'll have a great blog entry when you do so. Love ya. Sad that I missed you when you were here. :( xoxo

You and your hair will be beautiful regardless of what you do and don't do to it. Yes, by all means, I vote you grow it out and donate it. You might even like it short. If not, time will fix that!

i say cut it. They have a lot of cute hair styles for short hair, besides that, I find when I have long hair, I never do it. It just goes in a pony tail.

Awesome fire ant story. Yes, the power of the priesthood is wonderful.
Kelsey grew out her hair and donated it last year, and is now in the process of doing it again. For a pre-teen, that is a great show of love for other. I think that if you can deal with it for the time it takes to grow it out--go for it. You would look cute with short hair, too.

Hey, girl.. I say join Liv and I we are now growing our hair out to donate it again next summer. I am like you I never had short hair until my Mission. Short hair is more work to me, cause yes if I don't want to do it a pony tail is nice, but there is something about a cute and sassy short haircut that can be liberating and fun. Donating my hair just makes cutting it all off seem worth it.

Donate the hair, and then go Sinead O'Connor style. Buzz cuts are great for St. George summers.

Oh Happy Un-Birthday Kwint!!! Looks like you had a perfectly pirate day! Too fun.

I am so glad we got to see you guys while you were here. Thanks for taking some time with us. Loved it. We really are trying to plan to come to your neck of the woods in the Fall sometime.

As for your hair? You have amazingly beautiful hair. Yes, you will probably miss it and may not love yourself quite so much with short hair, BUT hair does grow. Its always fun to have a change. But more importantly, think how happy some cute little red head will be to get a wig that is just the right color!

So since I have never had hair as gorgeous as yours, I was nervous to weigh in. But then I talked to another dear friend who also has long, beautiful *curly* blonde hair who is also thinking of cutting it (her husband has finally decided he'd be okay with it short for a while), and she told me that she once, back in college, *did* donate her hair. And she thinks you should definitely do it.

I say yes to the hair! I have done it several times and am getting ready to do it again. The first time I cried, but in the end my hair wasn't that short, just above my shoulders.
